Understanding Sore Throat
Viral
Most Common
Usually resolves on its own within 7-10 days. Antibiotics not needed.
Bacterial
Requires Treatment
May need antibiotics. Pharmacist will assess using clinical criteria.
Warning Signs
Seek Help If
Severe symptoms, difficulty breathing/swallowing, or lasting over 3 weeks.
When Antibiotics Are Needed
Pharmacists use clinical scoring systems like FeverPAIN or Centor to determine if antibiotics are appropriate. Antibiotics are only prescribed for bacterial infections - most sore throats are viral and resolve naturally. Early treatment of bacterial infections can prevent complications and speed recovery.
