Understanding blood pressure

Normal

Below 120/80 mmHg

High-normal

120/80 – 140/90 mmHg

Pre-hypertension risk. Lifestyle changes recommended.

High (hypertension)

140/90 mmHg or above

Requires management. Medication may be needed alongside lifestyle changes.

Why regular checks matter

High blood pressure is called the "silent killer" because it typically has no symptoms until serious damage occurs. Untreated, it raises your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and dementia. Regular monitoring helps detect problems early when they're most treatable.

If your reading is elevated, we can fit you with a discreet 24-hour monitor (ABPM) to confirm your results from the comfort of your own home.

Eligibility & Cost

You are eligible for a free NHS check if you are aged 40 or over and have not previously been diagnosed with high blood pressure. You can also get a free check if you are under 40 but have a recognised family history of hypertension or a referral from your GP.
Private blood pressure checks typically cost between £10 and £15 depending on the pharmacy. This service is available to anyone who does not meet the NHS eligibility criteria (e.g., healthy adults under 40) but wants peace of mind about their heart health.
Yes, if you meet the NHS criteria, the consultation, the reading, and any follow-up advice are completely free. There are no hidden charges for the appointment or if you require a 24-hour monitor (ABPM).
Pregnant women should generally see their midwife or GP for blood pressure monitoring, as high blood pressure in pregnancy (pre-eclampsia) requires specialist care. However, pharmacists can provide general advice and signposting.
Healthy adults over 40 should have their blood pressure checked at least once every 5 years. If you are at higher risk or have had borderline readings in the past, you should check it at least once a year.
